LGBTQ+ Couples Therapy Intensives Across Toronto & Ontario

More time to slow the pattern down and work toward meaningful repair.

A private four-hour online therapy experience for LGBTQ+ couples across Ontario who want focused time to understand recurring conflict, address attachment injuries and develop clearer next steps.

Traditional weekly sessions can sometimes feel as though they end just when the deeper issue is becoming visible. A couples intensive provides additional time to slow down, explore the pattern and practise repair without having to stop after 50 or 75 minutes.

The intensive is structured, focused and adapted to the needs of your relationship.

An Intensive May Be Helpful If…

  • You repeatedly become caught in the same painful conflict.
  • Important conversations escalate, shut down or remain unresolved.
  • Trust has been damaged by secrecy, betrayal or an attachment injury.
  • You feel emotionally distant and unsure how to reconnect.
  • One partner pursues while the other withdraws.
  • A major decision or transition is placing pressure on the relationship.
  • Weekly sessions are difficult to schedule.
  • You want dedicated time to understand what is happening between you.
  • You are already in therapy and want a focused session addressing a particular pattern.
  • You want a clearer relationship map and practical next steps.

An intensive is not only for couples in crisis. It can also support couples who want to address an established concern before it becomes more damaging.

Why an Extended Session?

Recurring relationship patterns often involve several layers: the immediate disagreement, each partner’s protective response and the more vulnerable emotions underneath.

In a standard session, there may be limited time to identify the cycle, regulate escalating emotions, explore the deeper experience and practise a new response.

A four-hour format allows more room to:

  • Understand the concern bringing you to therapy
  • Identify your recurring conflict cycle
  • Explore the emotions and attachment needs underneath it
  • Pause when either partner becomes overwhelmed
  • Practise communicating and responding differently
  • Develop a shared plan for repair and continued work

Scheduled breaks are incorporated throughout the intensive.

What Is Included

Pre-Session Intake Review

Before the intensive, each partner completes intake information to help identify the relationship history, current concerns, goals and relevant safety considerations.

Four-Hour Facilitated Session

The session includes structured conversation, conflict-cycle mapping, attachment-focused exploration, practical interventions and scheduled breaks.

Conflict-Loop Map

Together, we identify the triggers, interpretations, protective reactions and emotional experiences that keep the recurring pattern active.

Attachment and Repair Work

Where appropriate, each partner is supported in expressing deeper emotions and needs while developing safer ways of responding to one another.

Structured Follow-Up Summary

After the intensive, you receive a summary of the primary relationship pattern, themes explored and recommended next steps.

Therapy That Understands Queer Relationships

LGBTQ+ relationships can be affected by experiences involving coming out, discrimination, family acceptance, chosen family, religion, culture, gender, sexuality and minority stress.

Some couples were never given affirming relationship models or language for understanding their experiences. Others have had to build their relationship while navigating systems that did not recognize or protect it.

Our approach is queer-affirming, trauma-informed and culturally responsive. It welcomes different LGBTQ+ identities and relationship structures without assuming that one model is appropriate for every couple.

What an Intensive Can - and Cannot- Do

A couples intensive can create meaningful space for understanding, emotional engagement and the development of new responses. However, it is not a guaranteed solution or a replacement for every form of ongoing care.

One extended session may help you establish a clearer map and direction, but some couples benefit from continued therapy afterward- particularly when concerns involve longstanding conflict, significant trauma or substantial trust injuries.

An intensive is not appropriate for emergencies or situations involving current violence, coercive control, fear of retaliation or forced participation. An individual assessment, specialized service or safety-focused intervention may be recommended instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the intensive four continuous hours?

The appointment is reserved for four hours, but scheduled breaks are included. The pace is adjusted according to the needs and emotional capacity of both partners.

Will one intensive repair our entire relationship?

An intensive can provide meaningful understanding, focused work and clearer next steps. It cannot guarantee a particular outcome or resolve every concern in one meeting.

Can we continue with regular couples therapy afterward?

Yes, when clinically appropriate and mutually agreed upon. Recommendations for follow-up are discussed as part of the intensive.

Can we participate from different locations?

This may be possible when both partners are physically located in Ontario and each person has a private, safe space with reliable internet. Discuss your circumstances during the consultation.

This page provides general information and does not replace individualized assessment, psychotherapy, medical care or emergency support. The LGBTQ+ Relationship Room is not a crisis service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or attend the nearest emergency department.
